Because the amount of friends/colleagues using Jaiku has dropped off - it has become a much less useful tool. As James says, what is the differcne between a discussion on Moodle?
Well - not everyone has a Moodle and not everyone has access to other people's moodle (if they do have one) - so both Twitter and Jaiku win that one.
- Jaiku keeps conversations in much better order than either Twitter or Moodle
- The RSS feeds allowed me to learn from the feeds of others
- I didn't get as much spam from Jaiku as I do from Twitter
I have to confess I am using Twitter more, but am not sure it is right for me, and my way of using it, and these last few days, loads of phantom presumably spammers have tried to connect with me, which is just annoying.
Well yesterday we were at out mobile learning event and had a twitter thing going on. There are just not enough people on jaiku any longer and I feel we have no choice but to go to twitter rather than here. As we have all mentioned many times, and Dave and I mentioned yesterday, Jaiku is much more useable and even useful - when it is working. And I miss the techdis crew too!
I have to be honest, I was quite happy promoting Jaiku as an educational tool, whereas I am more nervous about promoting Twitter as it is less useful, and there are more risks (as James identified in his 10 reasons why Twitter will die article on his blog) - and at the moment I think the risks outweigh the benefits at the moment.
Hi all, I find it alot harder to access and update twitter now the mobile support has gone. so I only really find the time to Jaiku when I'm back at my desk.
The key to Jaiku success (for our community of practice) appears to be the mobile element. The fact that people can text in, and receive Jaiku postings are what made it a viable community. Without those there is no community.
I think that it's more than that James. IT IS the mobile element of course (I miss Sal's communiques from all over the world and Lisa moaning about her car), but it's also the ability to reply at length (as we are doing here) and to debate an issue properly. To have RSS feeds from 'followed' and 'followers' too - I really miss that. And of course, the RSS feeds allowed the virtuous circle of image >> Flickr (whatever) >> RSS >> Jaiku >> comments from viewer.
Perhaps if you do go for it Lils (@lils??) you should include a native photo uploader too (like Twitpics) and audio potential (which we discussed brielfly on Saturday) ... Do you need any financial support from the team?
Having played with it a bit, you can have a group, you can add RSS feeds. Haven't worked out if there is a mobile element, but wonder if it could work with a third party service.
I think some people want to use SMS to send and receive posts (although replies at length will have to be excluded from this, maybe just the first 140 characters...) and others like me are happy to use a browser on a mobile device. We do need to get this idea funded somehow. If anyone's aware of anything that would support us...
The layout's gone a bit weird on Jaiku on the pc where they have our icons over our postings so you can't read the first bit of text! I notice you can 'click to insert screen name. Not sure what the purpose is? Going to have a go... hmm, it just adds an @ someone and repeats your post. Wonder what the purpose is...

Without the mobile bit or RSS Jaiku is a lot less useful then it use to be.
Still useful in some respects, and easier than Twitter for conversations like this.
But how does this now differ from a forum or a discussion on Moodle?

Unfortunately the decline we are seeing on Jaiku is self-fulfilling, we see less posts and discussion and as a result we post less and discuss less.
As result of that we see less posts and discussion and as a result we post less and discuss less...
With the loss of the mobile and RSS we have seen a core of our regular users "disappear" or post less.
Where is Lisa, Kev for example? Where are the TechDis crew?

We use Yammer (a closed version of Twitter) at work. Is this a viable alternative to Jaiku?

I wonder if Friendfeed could be the solution.

Not perfect, but adds commenting to Twitter.

Does the mobile element need to be SMS?
